Ministry and EFCC Forge Alliance to Combat Housing Fraud

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has announced a collaborative effort between the ministry and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to establish a robust housing fraud detection and monitoring platform. This initiative aims to tackle fraudulent practices within the housing sector effectively.

Speaking at the commissioning of De Mayor’s Estate and the launch of Project Broadfield in Abuja, the minister outlined the pivotal role of the planned platform in enabling Nigerians nationwide to report instances of housing fraud perpetrated by unscrupulous developers.
"The primary objective of the platform is to monitor and detect instances of housing fraud, ensuring accountability and transparency in the sector," explained Minister Dangiwa. "Our goal is to safeguard the rights and investments of Nigerians by establishing a transparent mechanism for reporting fraudulent activities."

He emphasized that the platform would empower citizens with a user-friendly online interface to submit complaints, provide evidence, and share relevant information anonymously or with their identity disclosed, based on personal preference.

Furthermore, Minister Dangiwa highlighted the platform's functionality in collecting, analyzing, and categorizing reported cases of housing fraud. This data-driven approach will aid in identifying patterns, trends, and hotspots of fraudulent activities in the real estate sector.
Operating within the existing legal framework governing the real estate sector, the platform will facilitate legal actions against fraudulent developers by providing evidence and support to law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies.

The minister stressed the ministry's commitment to curbing housing fraud, ensuring legal consequences for fraudulent developers, promoting transparency, and safeguarding the interests of Nigerians in the real estate market.

He issued a stern warning to developers engaging in substandard projects and fraudulent practices, emphasizing the ministry's resolve to enforce compliance with laid-down laws and regulations to prevent such malpractices.
Minister Dangiwa also underscored the significance of halting the use of substandard building materials and unethical practices, asserting that perpetrators would face prosecution and punishment.

"In this era, there will be no tolerance for fraudulent practices in the housing sector. Those who attempt to defraud Nigerians of their hard-earned money will face legal consequences," he declared.

Highlighting the plight of Nigerians victimized by unscrupulous elements in the built environment, Minister Dangiwa reiterated the collaboration with the EFCC to pursue accountability, protect investments, and combat financial crimes in the housing sector.

He emphasized that breaches of contract and fraudulent practices undermine the trust between developers and subscribers, warranting decisive action to uphold accountability and integrity in the housing market.

The collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the EFCC signify a determined stance against housing fraud, signaling a pivotal step towards ensuring transparency, accountability, and investor confidence in Nigeria's real estate sector.
