Lagos State to Revamp Markets for Traffic Management

In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion caused by vendors obstructing roads, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to reorganize markets across the state. Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, revealed this during a joint inspection and enforcement exercise conducted at Mandilas market on Lagos Island.

Led by Dr. Olajide Babatunde, along with Bola Olumegbon-Lawal, responsible for the Central Business District, Nurudeen Sodehinde, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, and Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the exercise resulted in the closure of the market for two days to facilitate compliance with directives to remove illegal make-shift structures obstructing roads within and around the market.

Failure to comply with the directive will lead to comprehensive government action, including the cost of demolition borne by defaulters. During the exercise, illegal structures attached to main buildings, including industrial generators, were dismantled.

This enforcement follows the expiration of a 14-day self-removal notice issued by the state government to traders, particularly on Tawaliu Bello Street near Mandalas on Lagos Island.
Furthermore, the state government reiterated its plan to relocate Computer Village from Ikeja to Katangowa in the Abule-Egba area. Dr. Olajide Babatunde highlighted the government's efforts to reorganize markets, aiming to address traffic congestion caused by road obstruction in Ikeja.

The Katangowa market is envisioned to provide comprehensive facilities, including schools, playgrounds, religious centers, and accommodation, to accommodate traders.

Dr. Babatunde emphasized the relocation of Computer Village, stating, "We are moving these people who seem to be on the road in Ikeja, also obstructing traffic, into a proper market big enough with all the services." The relocation aims to ensure proper organization and enhance the overall urban development of Lagos.
