Federal Government to Establish GIS Unit to Address Boundary Disputes

The Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation has committed to assigning a Geographical Information System (GIS) specialist to assist the Border Communities Development Agency in setting up its GIS unit. This announcement was made by the Surveyor General of the Federation, Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, during a visit by the Executive Secretary at the agency's headquarters in Abuja, as per a statement by Sani Datti, Head of Press and Public Relations.
Adebomehin offered his assurance of support and partnership in mapping and providing detailed information about border communities nationwide. "If you agree, we are prepared to provide one of our top experts to lead your GIS operations, which is crucial for handling transformation and coordinate systems effectively," he remarked.

He emphasized the difference between possessing satellite imagery and the ability to interpret it correctly. The Executive Secretary of the Border Communities Development Agency, Dr. Dakorinama George, highlighted the need for exceptional collaboration with the Surveyor General's office to enhance the agency's ability to serve communities located across 105 local governments in about 21 states. Access to these border communities is often challenging, underscoring the importance of accurate data and support from the Surveyor General’s Office for effective outreach and understanding of their needs.
"We rely heavily on the comprehensive border data and field information your office holds, as it is essential for us to reconnect and strengthen our ongoing partnership," Dr. George stated.

He also mentioned that he had recently sought approval from the Presidency to create a dedicated GIS unit within the agency, aiming to establish a more effective communication and coordination link with the Office of the Surveyor General.
