Dangote Cement Takes Lead in Addressing Cement Industry's Carbon Emissions

In a recent revelation at the 12th Africa Cement Trade Summit held in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, Arvind Pathak, the Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, shared insights into the environmental impact of the cement industry. According to Pathak, the cement industry is responsible for a substantial seven percent of global carbon emissions.

Pathak outlined the intricacies of the cement value chain, emphasizing its energy-intensive processes, including raw materials mining, crushing, mixing, drying, firing, clinker grinding, packaging, and dispatch. Notably, these processes collectively contribute to the industry's significant carbon footprint.

One critical aspect highlighted by Pathak is the energy consumption associated with cement production. The process consumes approximately 3.3 gigajoules per tonne of clinker produced in thermal energy and 90 to 120 kilowatt-hours per tonne of cement in electrical energy.
To address the environmental impact, Pathak discussed Dangote Cement's commitment to decreasing CO2 emissions through a fuel substitution strategy. This strategy involves replacing fossil fuels with alternative fuels, such as municipal, agricultural, and industrial wastes. Pathak emphasized that alternative fuels emit less CO2 when combusted, with agricultural biomass being recognized as carbon-neutral.

During the summit, Pathak presented a paper titled "Utilisation of Alternative Fuels as a Strategy for Sustainable Cement Production in Africa." He underscored the effectiveness of using alternative fuels and stressed the urgent need for decarbonization in the industry.
Despite acknowledging that emissions challenges would persist, Pathak expressed optimism about the cement industry's role in addressing climate change. He highlighted Dangote Cement's initiative to manage Africa's waste problem by utilizing hazardous waste in cement kilns, aligning with the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

Pathak urged businesses to set clear and detailed short-, medium-, and long-term targets for decarbonization. Dangote Cement's proactive approach to sustainability reporting, which saw an improvement from a C to a B+ rating on climate change, reflects the company's commitment to navigating environmental challenges while maintaining corporate success.
