Nigeria's Battle Against Desertification and Climate Crisis

Addressing Desertification - Nigeria's Land Recovery Efforts in Fighting Climate Change
The fight against climate change has taken center stage in Nigeria's governmental agenda, with a particular focus on reclaiming land lost to desertification, especially in the Northern region of the country. Land, being a crucial asset in the nation's economy, has spurred concerted efforts to recover lost parcels, driven by the scarcity of land for various economic activities such as real estate, agriculture, industrialization, and warehousing, particularly in urban areas.

Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Minister of Environment, emphasized the government's commitment to addressing climate change during a recent address. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu's concerns regarding the rapid encroachment of desertification in the nation. Lawal underscored the significance of collaboration among government ministries and international partners, including the World Bank, in tackling environmental challenges effectively.

Lawal's remarks came during a visit from a team of environment experts from the World Bank, including officials from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project. The collaboration aims to establish a multi-institutional framework to combat landscape degradation in the Northern region and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The ACReSAL project is envisioned as a catalyst for inter-agency cooperation among federal and state ministries, local governments, communities, and civil societies. It seeks to address a range of issues including natural resource degradation, poor agricultural productivity, climate risks, desertification, poverty, conflicts, and weak institutional capacity.

The project encompasses various initiatives involving federal and state Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), focusing on planning, economy, finance, agriculture, water resources, forests, transport, power, emergency response, and climate regulation. The Minister expressed optimism that ACReSAL would deliver tangible results through enhanced collaboration and assured the project's National Coordinator of the Ministry's support.
Joy Iganya Agene, the Task Team leader of the ACReSAL Project and Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank, acknowledged the significant progress achieved by the project. She emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the government and international partners to ensure the project's success.

In conclusion, Nigeria's land recovery efforts represent a crucial component of its strategy to combat climate change and mitigate the adverse effects of desertification. Through collaborative initiatives like ACReSAL, the government aims to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development across the country.
